COURTYARD HOUSE

Replacing a substantial homestead lost to bushfire, the Courtyard House draws inspiration from the Roman ‘atrium house’ typology. Courtyard House restores the past in the present day.

A series of connected pavilions are arranged on site to create a sheltered courtyard. At the centre of the courtyard, the ruins of the homestead’s original cellar are transformed into a sunken garden. It offers the family restoration and healing with a gathering space in the center of the home.

The design uses a palette of robust materials including naturally fire-resistant blackbutt, concrete, off-white concrete blocks. With use of locally sourced materials and ancient design, Courtyard House truly sets it’s roots deep into the place which it resides.
